The National Centre for Biological Sciences (a constituent centre of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, an autonomous institution under the Department of Atomic Energy) is devoted to excellent research in biology across scales, from molecules to ecosystems.

NCBS mirrors the TIFR mission and vision, and aims to lead discovery and basic understanding of the life sciences, contributing to the growth of human knowledge, while nurturing young scientists, and contributing evidence to science-based social challenges. Through dissemination of this knowledge we hope to create a better scientific temper in society, aligned with an evidence-based future.

The science at NCBS is curiosity driven, out-of-the-box, innovative, creative and original, which results in novel, significant and impactful insights into our living world. Our scientific culture encourages interdisciplinarity, collegiality, collaboration, non-hierarchical engagement, and objective and unbiased approaches. We hope our campus is a diverse, inclusive, safe and nurturing space for early career researchers, staff and faculty.

Critical to the growth of research at NCBS has been the hiring of excellent faculty, who are diverse backgrounds in the natural, engineering and mathematical sciences. Our research is facilitated by research infrastructure and facilities which are excellent, cutting-edge, accessible, well-managed, used optimally and allow most kinds of research in biology to be conducted in-house. Well-qualified and trained staff manage our facilities and equipment.

Students, research fellows, and post-doctoral fellows are the strength of our research community and keep the environment vibrant and fresh.
We host a range of laboratory and lecture courses, seminars, symposia and meetings, with speakers, teachers and participants from all over the world.
We love to share the joy of discovery and our science we do with others around us.
