Advt No.21/2015 : Appointment of Post Doctoral Fellows in research areas related to Chemical Ecology

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAMME:

The program is titled “Chemical Ecology of the North East Region (NER) of India: A Collaborative Programme Linking NER and Bangalore Researchers” and is funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt of India, for the duration of 5 years. This is a novel and exciting collaborative and interdisciplinary program between institutions in the North-Eastern Region (Nagaland Science and Technology Council-Nagaland; Kohima Science College, Nagaland university; Institute of Bioresources & Sustainable Development (IBSD)-Imphal; IBSD-Sikkim; Rajiv Gandhi University-Arunachal Pradesh; Northeastern Hill University-Shillong and partners in Bangalore (National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS)). A major focus of this integrated programme will be on the chemical ecology of interactions among plants, animals, fungi and microbes. Such interactions and their understanding will impact many fields of biology, including agriculture, medicine  and biotechnology. The program will highlight the North-eastern region of India, which offers unique natural resources and opportunities for field research in Chemical Ecology. The main goal of the program is capacity building, including tailored interdisciplinary training to Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows.

To accomplish its goals  the programme will recruit postdoctoral students who will work exclusively on projects that closely involve PIs from Bangalore with collaborations with partner PIs in Northeast regions.

DETAILS OF THE PROJECTS:

Applications are invited for Postdoctoral positions in the below-mentioned Bangalore institutes for the following projects:

1. Understanding interactions between evolutionary history and ecological interactions using a tropical biodiversity elevation gradient   (Uma Ramakrishnan, Shannon Olsson, NCBS)

2. Effects of increased temperatures on plant–insect interactions in high altitude meadow ecosystems of the Eastern Himalayas (Mahesh Sankaran, NCBS)

3. Understanding natural variation and genetic basis of development and extrafloral nectar secretion in Ricinus communis (P.V. Sivaprasad, Radhika Venkatesan, NCBS)

4. Testing for co-evolution between rice landraces and epiphytic Methylobacterium oryzae (Deepa Agashe, NCBS)

5. Co-evolutionary processes in the relationship between figs and fig wasps at a landscape scale: a chemical ecology perspective (Renee M. Borges, IISC- 2 posts: one largely field-oriented and the other related to transcriptomics/genomics of olfaction)

ELIGIBILITY:

Suitable candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree from a national or foreign University/Institute in a field related to chemistry, biology, chemical ecology, entomology, biochemistry, molecular biology, animal behaviour, plant sciences, or life sciences. Excellent problem solving, oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills with experience working within a team, as well as an ability to work under field conditions are desirable.

DETAILS OF THE FELLOWSHIP:

The Postdoctoral fellowship is a purely temporary assignment and is tenable for a period of maximum of 5 years, based on annual review of performance. Each fellow would be entitled to a stipend in the range of Rs. 36,000 -38,000- 40,000 per month + HRA.
