The National Centre for Biological Sciences & Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Bangalore Bio-Cluster Mouse Genome Engineering Facility is looking for Senior Facility Caretaker to work with us and the Archives at NCBS.
Qualification & Experience: Required Bachelor’s degree in sciences/English/History. Required experience of at least six months in facility management and archival services at an established academic institution or project in India and/or a degree in history.
Desirable Experience: Facility management and archival services at an established scientific academic institution or project in India and familiarity with software like ArchivesSpace, Zotero, AtoM, Islandora, experience in development of finding aids, and familiarity with Drupal Content Management System.
Job Responsibilities:
Archives at NCBS collaboration and coordination with Animal Facility.
The Archives is partnering with the Animal Facility to develop a nuanced understanding of the history and future of the animal facility and similar facilities on campus as a resource for the community. This work will include an understanding of recordkeeping methods in the archives, the Animal Facility and related spaces. It will require review of the current collections in the archives, a survey of upcoming material from campus facilities. There will be an upgrade of the existing records through work on under-processed material to add to six collections and another 10 unprocessed small donations of collections (three large donations, and seven small donations). Processing includes rigorous archival description to ready it for research. Academic or practical knowledge of archival accessioning, description methods is necessary, including understanding of archival finding aids and hierarchical structure of material. Familiarity with any mplementation of archival standards and description is a plus but not necessary. Individuals will be required to work on populating archival accessioning and description data using spreadsheets, ArchivesSpace and the campus Drupal platform. In addition, there will be recordkeeping measures and migration of data to Access to Memory (https://www.accesstomemory.org/) platform for digital objects. Training can be provided for these but a prior understanding of intent is expected. Individuals are expected to have a broad understanding of privacy and copyright issues with privately donated material, and the broad distinctions between restricted and unrestricted material. Ability to apply archival judgment to earmark archival material for conservation/preservation is a plus. Individuals should be competent with most things digital (spreadsheets, word processing, database entry, web navigation, ability to figure out scanning and archiving cataloguing needs). They should have good organization and communication skills (English and preferably also Hindi or Kannada). Commitment to time, an eye for detail and an ability to self-direct after initial training is critical. About 25 percent of the time for the position is dedicated to occasional administrative duties related to the running of the archive and on outreach. Individual is required to have provided similar archival services at an established academic institution or project in India and provide proof of the same.
