Upinder Singh

Upinder Singh studied History at St. Stephen’s College Delhi and specialized in ancient Indian history for her MA and MPhil at the University of Delhi. She obtained her PhD degree from McGill University, Montreal. She taught for many years in St. Stephen’s College before joining the History Department of the University of Delhi. Her writings range over various aspects of ancient Indian social, economic, religious and cultural history. She has also written on the history of 19th century Indian archaeology and the modern histories of ancient sites and monuments. She is the author of Kings, Brahmanas, and Temples in Orissa: An Epigraphic Study (AD 300-1147) (1994); Ancient Delhi (1999); The Discovery of Ancient India: Early Archaeologists and the Beginnings of Archaeology (2004); and A History of Ancient and Early Medieval India: From the Stone Age to the Twelfth Century (2008). Her edited books are Delhi: Ancient History (2006); Ancient India: New Research (co-edited, 2009); and most recently, Rethinking Early Medieval India (2011). She has also written a book for children, Mysteries of the Past: Archaeological Sites in India (2002). Upinder Singh was a recipient of the Infosys prize for Social Sciences -- History in 2009. She is currently working on the problem of violence in ancient India.
