About the workshop:

The order Squamata is the largest group of reptiles with close to 11,000 species found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. India includes over 700 squamates, of which more than 200 have been described in the last two decades alone!

Taxonomy forms the basis of all studies in ecology and evolution, it is essential to know the specific identity of the organisms being studied. India also has an incredible amount of unknown biodiversity, with more than 111 squamates described since 2020!

This workshop is aimed primarily at researchers using reptiles as model systems in studies in ecology and evolution and systematics. The course will provide participants with an understanding of the basic principles of taxonomy and an introduction to the Code; techniques in reptile collection, preservation and curation; an introduction to Indian reptile diversity; how to record morphological characters as well as identify some major squamate families and species
