Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the accumulation of protein aggregates that are formed due to mutant proteins which contain longer than usual poly-Q stretches. Such aggregates/granules have been shown to contain both molecular chaperones as well as components of the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS). However, not much is known as to how proteins belonging to these two families are involved in these granules. I am interested in the mechanistic details in which molecular chaperones and UPS are involved in the assembly/clearance of poly-Q granules in the cells.
