On 9th February, we have a talk, "Spikes and shapes inside insect brains", by Dr. Joby Joseph, of the Neuronal Systems Lab at the University of Hyderabad.

It is estimated that there are approximately 5.5 million insect species on earth. Perception and behaviours that enable insects to survive and reproduce are made possible by the brain, just like in other animals. How the brain, which is predominantly made up of neurons, enables these perceptions and behaviours in animals is still a mystery, though we have made great strides in our understanding. Looking closely at insect brains and how they function has contributed enormously to making these strides. I will talk about the different aspects of how scientists gain this understanding using insect systems.
